How to Write Your Company Boilerplate

A press release boilerplate is a brief description of your company and includes key business information. It appears at the end of a press release. A well written  boilerplate adds credibility to the press release, provides space to promote your company’s accomplishments and can drive investor and customer interest.

As you are writing your boilerplate, keep these key tips in mind.

A boilerplate should be no more than 100 words. Less is more!

Step 1: Start with your value proposition

Use the value proposition you created earlier to start your boilerplate. Instructions can be found here, if you missed this step.

Step 2: Highlight founder’s expertise

Using the experience and expertise of founders is a powerful way to add credibility. If the founders have brand-name recognition or have had successful exits in the past, make sure to highlight that.

You will also want to highlight industry experience or knowledge of the industry you are working in.

For example:

Acme is a digital healthcare platform empowering consumers to own and understand their data, for better health outcomes. Founded by seasoned entrepreneur, Jane Doe after selling Digital Health Inc to BCBS,……

The reason Step 2 is important for start-ups is because the company has yet to establish a reputation. Highlighting your founders reinforces your ties to the industry and gives people reason to trust your expertise.

Step 3: Use Tie-ins

Add a Tie-in if your business has a connection to a well-known problem or a personal passion. Your story and relatability are important to prospective investors, customers, and employees. Including a sentence that connects others with your story or shared narrative is powerful.

While your value proposition helps explain what you do, expanding on your mission in the release can be a powerful tool to engage and share more of your vision.

If you have already launched and have good customer traction, a well-known investor, or other major accomplishment, you can also add a section after the mission or instead of it if you are running over word count.

Step 5: Share your Goals and Get People to Act

Are you looking for users? Have a link in your press release for readers to sign up.

Are you in the middle of a capital raise that allows you to generally solicit for investors? Let them know how to reach you and/or provide a clear call-to-action.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Always have press releases reviewed by your attorney or advisors if you are including language about an active capital raise.
